Adventures of a Makeup Misfit

Adventures of a Makeup Misfit

I have the pleasure of introducing my new co-blogger, Ani Baraka!   Besides being my BFF (in real life) she is an amazing poet, true southern belle, music & wine connoisseur and mommy with a fetish for heels!  While she has been into fashion for quite awhile, she really didn't do the makeup thing until her stylist cousin turned her into a glamazon for a poetry show (see left).  I don't know if she's hooked yet but she's getting there! So without further ado, The Adventures of a Makeup Misfit!

********************************************

Have you ever been to a foreign country? When you get off the plane you want to try everything. You look around at all the sights and try to decide where to go first so that you get the maximum experience possible. However, there are obstacles in your way, such as language barriers and general lack of direction. To your dismay the people stare at you like you're an alien, because honestly you are.

Well to my surprise, this is what buying makeup was like for me. I entered the cosmetic aisle with all of this great optimism. I mean, I know what I look like and I know what looks good on me. I've always been pretty fashion forward, however, this experience for me was quite awe-inspiring. As I approached the "great wall of makeup", it became clear to me that I did not speak the language of the natives!

I walked up and down that aisle looking at makeup references and color palettes (my compass) and having no idea where was north. I quickly exited the area and called my sister who lives there so that she could give me directions. She giggled a little to herself, not because she was laughing at me, but because her, my mother and every other woman in my life speak makeup fluently. Me on the other hand, I never really showed an interest in makeup beyond a neutral lip gloss and finger nail polish.

Well, as I was begging my sister for assistance, a local ( she worked in the store) finally asked me if I needed help. By that time, my sister had given me some pretty basic steps to reach my destination; manageable makeup that even I couldn't mess up. She first asked me where I was, what makeup I owned and then told me what I needed to try. Considering I don't have damaged skin or many breakouts and the only blemishes I have are freckles, she told me to try a tinted moisturizer. This is basically lotion with color added (who knew?!). She also told me to pick up some mascara, an eye pencil and eye shadow that I was comfortable with. Thus began my adventure into the world of makeup art.

For many people applying makeup is overwhelming. I mean seriously, I looked at everything that I purchased and was thinking, what do I put on first? I didn't want to look like a clown or the heroine from a bad 1970s movie. So once again I called for reinforcements. I had my mother in the room with me and got my sister on the line promptly. By this time she was in tears laughing at me. Mostly because she's so used to me being confident and having things under control or at least having a contingency plan. Well, I had nothing. Eventually, with the help of my mother and sister, I found my place in the makeup world. I am officially a Makeup Misfit.

This Makeup Misfit will share with you all of the perils and fashion havens I encounter as I venture into the uncharted territory of makeup shopping, application and the affects it has on me in my life and skin. From the mind of someone who has never before traveled to the lands of L'Oreal or seen a Covergirl up close, this will truly prove to be an exploration for us all.

Modiface: The Ultimate Virtual Makeover

I am so in love with this app! I can not stop giving myself a makeover!  Modiface is an application that allows you to try different hairstyles, eyeshadows, lip colors and hair colors, virtually!  They even have a foundation matcher that tells you your skin color, undertone and finds shades in powder or liquid that matches you perfectly! They even have tools to blur out skin imperfections and see what you would look like with a little bit of plastic surgery! Once I found out about Modiface, I couldn't stop with the different looks!  I've "tried" a little nip tuck on my face; tried different color palettes on my eyes, and I've even gone from black hair to red to brown to blonde..all in an hour!  I love this app!

From the Modiface website:

"ModiFace's story starts in 1999 at Stanford University, where the initial research on automatic face analysis began. This work continued at the University of Toronto from 2001-2006, including the development of signal processing algorithms that won a world-wide innovation prize from MIT. In 2006, ModiFace Inc. was born. Today, ModiFace's patented technology powers over 100 web and mobile apps which have had more than 20 million mobile downloads and generated nearly half a billion virtual makeovers."

1 million of those 50 billion make overs have to be mine (smile)

With this app you can:

"Virtually try on makeup and celebrity looks, with photo-realistic makeup and hair simulations. Specific app features include:
  • Over 50 rendering styles and options, including winged eyeliners and facial sculpting
  • Ability to brush and color hairstyles, with new celebrity hairstyles added weekly" (from the modiface site)
So give it a try!  Upload a picture or take one from facebook and try any look you want!

Also available for your mobile device!  Make sure you like Modiface on Facebook here http://facebook.com/modiface

Happy Makeovers!

Product Review and Giveaway!: Bee Naturals

Product Review and Giveaway!:

Bee Naturals

Months ago, I was asked to review some of  Bee Naturals products.  The products were sent to me right after the birth of my baby. I was ecstatic, because I have actually heard of these
products from a friend of mine who is a total natural living, vegan, herbs and juicing type of chick; and she swore by them. However, due to the new arrival in my family, the chaos that is my life, poor time management, selfishness (more on that later) and pure laziness, I haven't gotten around to it until now.  Don't judge me.

Anyway...

If you are not familiar with Bee Naturals here is the back story from their website http://beenaturals.com:

As a nurse, Barbara Chappuis developed Bee Naturals™ Skin Creme Bars to protect her own hands from the myriad of harmful substances in the hospital work environment. Her hands were cracked, raw, and nearly bleeding, even with constant use of virtually every commercially available creme and lotion. Many of those products also included chemicals that are as harmful to the skin as what she needed protection from, such as parabens. After much research and formulation with natural ingredients, and proof with her own hands healing, her Skin Creme Bar reached its final form. Because the creme was for her own use she refused to skimp on high quality ingredients, as she continues to do with all her products. There are no superfluous ingredients -- everything in Bee Naturals products have a specific therapeutic purpose.  They protect and heal skin, period.

And that it does.  Here is a video showing the Bee Naturals shop.

In my goodie box, I was sent 2 lipsticks-in Cherry and Raisin; Baby Balm, Skin Creme Stick, Ultimate Foot Creme, and Miracle Skin Creme.  Before I even get started with the review, I do want to say my intention was to give away most of the stuff, for you, my dear readers...HOWEVER, Bee Naturals products are soooooo good, my selfishness took over and I had to have most of the products.  I am sorry...what do you want me to do?!

First off, my new favorite lipstick is Bee Naturals Luxury Lipstick with Vitamins in Raisin.  It is nourishing ,  the Luxury Lipsticks are enriched in vitamin A and E (I have this weird LL Cool J thing going with the licking of the lips, so my lips get chapped a lot) and the color pretty much stays with a few touch ups here and there. My new addiction is red lipstick and the Cherry works perfectly.

Next up is the Baby Balm.  LOVE. IT.  (Chloe loves it too)  The Bee Naturals Baby Balm is lightly scented with lavender and sweet orange essential oils.  I have used this balm religiously, and despite Chloe's sensitive skin she has had no diaper rash nor irritation on her bum.  As an added bonus my hands feel marvelous after I apply the balm!

Lastly, is the Skin Creme Stick.  It comes in a deodorant shaped bottle and you glide it over any area that is particularly dry or chapped.  With ingredients like olive oil and coconut oil, you immediately feel the moisture.  It is especially good for dry, cracked heels.  It rolls on well and it doesn't leave your skin feeling greasy.  I apply it as soon as I get out of the shower and my skin stays moisturized all day.

I am absolutely in love with Bee Naturals products.  Matter of fact, I, unfortunately, left my favorite Luxury Lipstick in Raisin in my car on a 100 degree day...so I am going to stock up on my Luxury Lipstick as soon as I finish this post.  That's how much I love it.
